What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple sclerosis or MS can potentially be a disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord which is the central nervous system. In multiple sclerosis, the immune system attacks the protective sheath that covers nerve fibers and causes communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body. After a certain time period, the disease can cause the nerves themselves to wear out or become permanently damaged. Signs and symptoms of multiple sclerosis vary widely and depend on the amount of nerve damage and which nerves are affected. Some people with severe MS may lose the ability to walk by themselves or not to be able to walk at all, while others may experience long periods of new symptoms. There is currently no cure for multiple sclerosis. However, treatments can help speed recovery from attacks and manage symptoms which will help with pain.
